Things are tough all over. The US (and global) economy continues to fall faster than a drunken sailor with vertigo. Many of us (i.e. me) are concerned about keeping our jobs, food on the table, and a roof over our heads. A few of us (i.e. me, again) are also concerned about how — or if — we can keep buying comics at the same time we’re tightening our belts. During these difficult economic times, I wonder if the Comic Book Direct Market — more specifically the Local Comics Shop — will survive?

I’m glad to see DC Comics is releasing issue checklists for their events. Marvel has released checklists for all their events for years and it’s been a huge help for the OCD completist (ie. me) to keep up with stories that cross into issues that might not appear on their normal pull lists. DC, although slow to join the party, released checklists for Batman: RIP, Final Crisis and — now — New Krypton. I hope the powers at DC Comics keep up the checklists with upcoming events.

Let me start by admitting that I consciously avoided reading All-Star Batman and Robin, The Boy Wonder when it began in 2005. Why? I loved Frank Miller’s work on Daredevil in the 1970s. He almost single-handedly revived Batman as a serious character with The Dark Knight Returns and Batman: Year One in the 1980s. He reintroduced hard-boiled crime noir to comics with Sin City. Then, in my humble opinion, he stumbled when he revisited the Batverse with The Dark Knight Strikes Again in 2001.
